Hello,
We’ve received an email from the Shopify team regarding the annual review of our app.
One point was 4.3.3 Don’t distract merchants: The color red must be used for error messages or destructive actions only. Do not use it for other purposes.
We already fixed some but not sure about these cases.
Do you think these are okay to ignore?
Thank you!
Hey @remy727
- just confirming we can’t give a formal BFS review decision here, but I wouldn’t treat all of these the same.
The Cancel Plan button looks aligned with the guidance since that’s a destructive action. At capacity and [Expired] may also be okay if those states mean the slot/window is no longer available or the merchant can’t take the normal action there.
The downward analytics trend is the one I’d change. Since that’s more of a metric indicator than an error or destructive/blocked state, I’d switch it to neutral or caution styling and let the arrow/text communicate the decrease.
For resubmission, I’d remove red anywhere it’s only being used for emphasis, and keep it only where the state is blocked/unavailable, an actual error, or a destructive action.
Hope this helps a bit
Thank you, @Alan_G
I was confused because I saw red being used to indicate a downward trend in this example.
I’m now very clear on when to use red.
No wories @remy727 - thanks for flagging! It does mention using Red alongside a symbol which it seems like you did, so if you wanted to keep it that way, I’d say you would likely be okay if you pointed to that documentation (although BFS reviewers always have the final say, so I can’t give guarantees). For my message above I was referring to our docs here: Visual design
That’s where we mention our guidance on using red:
“Red should only be used to convey messaging that implies an action is impossible, blocked, or has resulted in an error. Avoid using red to entice merchants or to draw unnecessary attention.”
Let me know if I can help out further!
