Shopify Admin order view Line item property links gettting cut off

Hi Team, we are getting reports from merchants that the line item properties links are getting cut off. This seems to be caused by a recent UI update for the admin.

Merchants rely on seeing the full link, including the filename for their workflows.

Now the link is being truncated with “…”:

@Liam-Shopify any chance you can forward this to the right team?

Thanks!

I’m representing one of the merchants facing this issue. To be a little more precise on the behavior here a more detailed description:

In the orders overview the uploaded files used to be shown precisely as the filename the customer gave them e.g. upload_1: example-image.png.

Right click + “Save as … “ worked properly and allowing directly downloading the file.

Our entire workflow is based on this funktionality.

Since today the file names are no longer shown as before. Instead now all look like “upload_1:upload.cloudlift.app…” not showing the precise filename.

Now right click + “Save as … “ no longer loads the image itself but instead an HTML file

I hope this clarifies the issues a little more.

We did not change anything at the shop itself and Upload-Lift also did not make any changes. So the assumption is it might come from latest Shopify changes to the UI, API or custom data structure somehow.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Kindest regards!

Armin

Especially getting the right click + “Save as … “ functionality to download the linked file directly from the order overview back is important to us. Even more than getting the procise filename (with or without full path) visible.

Hi @michael and @Armin

Thanks for flagging this - just for my own understanding are the line item links appearing in the UI of your app, or on the native admin order pages? If on the app, which components are you using to render these links?

The links are in the native Shopify Admin Order detail view.

Previously it was just listed as:
Property: Link
(the link was directly clickable and accessible via “Save as …”)

Now:
Property: www.domain.com/eter
the click now opens another popup with the full link

Merchants should be able to directly download links from the admin, this new change adds more friction without any benefit.

Thanks for looking into this @Liam-Shopify :+1:

Hi Team, we are still getting customer complaints about this issue, when stating that this change is not from our end, they are not believing us.. Shopify support is also blaming this on us:

How are we supposed to fix a UI change in the Shopify admin? Our data on the order line items has not changed. (simply contains the links to file uploads).

The main problem is that the change was made without any communication (no entry in the changelog).

Any help is much appreciated!

We are experiencing the same exact friction from merchants and direct blame from Shopify support, leading to loss in trust from the merchant to app. One support agent, after I sent a response from the Shopify Dev team stating that it was Shopify’s change, went as far as to state that she reviewed the Shopify Dev response and “discussed it with internal teams” and it is still the app’s code problem. Hopefully there can be some communication to your Support team, sooner than later, so we don’t receive uninstalled and bad reviews because trust lies with Shopify at your size, versus us as Partners.

Hello Shopify Developer Team,

I commend you for developing this mechanism to address security concerns. Since malicious actors could easily inject harmful URLs into this area, this was definitely a necessary approach. However, we have encountered situations that slow down or disrupt the workflow of our applications.

In addition to the issues Shopify app owners are facing, I would like to offer the following suggestions:

My first suggestion:
The domain name of a previously known trusted link could be cached so that two clicks are not required each time. At the very least, commonly trusted addresses such as example.myshopify.com, shopurl.com, admin.shopify.com, and similar domains could be added to the whitelist by default.

My second suggestion:
Instead of shortening the link (example-domain.com…), the value after the last “/” in links containing the /uploads/ expression—which is a default feature in the Shopify Dawn theme as well as many others—could be displayed. Since this mechanism has become standard, I believe it would also be beneficial to have it on the Shopify admin order details page.

It has been over a month now that the issue first showed up and was reported to the shopify support. Yet we have no “official statement” whether or not this will be adressed by shopify dev team, right?
