Is it possible to get Shopify payments with Shop Pay set up in a dev store without submitting your real Social Security number and identity documents?
Hey @kalen
Is this not possible with Shopify Payments in test mode? Were you doing this before the dev dash migration?
Well I mean just to enable shopify payments in the first place you need to submit your social security number and ID docs.
+1, it used to be possible to start the process to enable Shopify Payments, but then exit out and reach the settings to enable test mode. That is no longer possible. I use it to demo saved payment methods in B2B locations.
Hi! The issue still remains. We are unable to test Shop Pay Installments because we can’t set up Shopify Payments on the dev store in the first place. Moreover, the combination of Shopify Payments + Shop Pay in test mode still doesn’t make the store eligible to use or test part of Shopify’s functionality, some of which is required for theme devs. @Liam-Shopify could you, please, look into this?
Hey folks, I just wanted to follow up here with some guidance in case it’s helpful after speaking with some colleagues internally.
Due to how Shopify Payments onboarding works, you do need to complete the initial setup flow before test mode becomes available, and that includes providing identity information. This applies to dev stores the same as any other store type.
That said, if your dev store will never be used to process real transactions, you can use placeholder data to get through the onboarding flow. The data still needs to pass basic validation so simple sequences like 123456789 for an SSN won’t work, but something plausible will. After submitting you’ll likely receive KYC information requests which you can safely ignore for a dev-only store. Once onboarding is complete, test mode can be enabled and test charges will go through even if real charges are disabled.
This approach is only appropriate for stores that will never process real payments. If the store will eventually go live, real and accurate information is required during onboarding.
I do understand the frustration here, especially for theme devs and those testing things like Shop Pay Installments or B2B flows, and I’ve made sure this feedback has been heard on our side. I can’t guarantee any changes, but I did want to let you know I’ve advocated on my end here since I understand that it’s not the most ideal process. Please let us know if you hit any snags with the flow!
