Shopify sets new shipping address as default without consent

I have a default address saved in my Shopify customer profile. Recently, while placing an order, I chose to ship the item to a different address — one that I entered manually during checkout.

After placing the order, I noticed that the new address was automatically added to my profile and set as the default address, replacing my original one — without any notification or consent.

This is a serious issue. It can cause confusion or shipping errors in future orders, especially if the customer isn’t aware their default address has silently changed.

  1. Why is Shopify updating the default address automatically?
  2. How can I prevent Shopify from saving new addresses to my profile or changing the default?

I believe new addresses should only be saved to a customer’s profile if explicitly confirmed by the user — not automatically as a side effect of checkout.

Any advice, explanation, or workaround would be appreciated.

Hi @shanay_Shah

This forum is for developers building with Shopify’s APIs - however I flagged this behaviour to the relevent team internally.
