A product image can be mathematically perfectly centered and still look completely wrong.
Geometric center ≠ Optical center.
I noticed this is a common issue with e-commerce product images, especially when products have irregular shapes or uneven visual weight.
Most image-processing tools focus on background removal and resizing. But neither guarantees that a product looks centered.
That’s the problem I’ve been working on with Optical Background Remover, a Shopify app that combines AI background removal with automatic optical centering and consistent product scaling.
I opened this thread specifically to get feedback from fellow Shopify developers.
I’m particularly curious:
-
How are you handling visual alignment across different product shapes?
-
Do you think optical centering is worth prioritizing over traditional bounding-box alignment?
There’s a free trial, and I’m happy to provide extra testing credits to developers who want to experiment and share their honest technical feedback.
Would love to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve worked with product image processing at scale.
