Is it allowed to restrict access to development stores?

Hi everyone,

Is it allowed to show a modal inside an app when a development store is detected, asking the user to contact support if they need the app enabled for that development store?

We want to understand whether this kind of message could create any issues during Shopify’s periodic app reviews.

Has anyone implemented something similar, or received feedback from Shopify about this?

Thanks!

This is relatively normal. I’ve experienced this from other apps. Partner friendliness unfortunately is going away more and more with the rise of copy cats that rip off apps left and right so I think you’re on the right track with showing a modal or message for development stores.

If you’re detecting development stores, I’d recommend scoping for the staff Shopify Plan to ensure reviewers don’t see your modal during reviews.

We have been blocking users for years based on a variety of criteria. We had witnessed various shenanigans and brought them to Shopify’s attention and —of course— they refused to do anything!

Block away!

It’s worth pointing out that if you’re doing this manually you can’t rely on Shopify’s label for the store in the Partner Dashboard. It will show “Advanced” but this is not the old school Advanced Plan. This could be “Advanced App Development”

Yeah, the new plan names from dev dash are a little weird but not impossible to work around.
