Theme editor incorrectly reports another user is editing the theme, making it difficult to save changes.

Reproduction steps
Open the theme editor for my newly created theme.
Make any change (for example, modify a section setting or update some code).
Try to save the changes.
The editor displays a message saying that another user is currently editing the theme.
Retry saving the same change multiple times. After 4–5 attempts, the change is eventually saved.
Additional info
This is a brand-new theme that I created, and I am the only person working on it. No one else has the theme editor open.
The warning about another user editing the theme appears consistently, even though there are no concurrent editors. The issue doesn’t completely prevent me from saving changes, but it makes the process unreliable. I usually have to retry the same modification 4–5 times before it is finally saved.
I’ve tried refreshing the page and reopening the editor, but the issue persists.
Hey @Ilan_Zerdoun - thanks for flagging this and for including the screenshot.
I checked this against what we’re seeing on our end, and this does look like it may be related to some issues we’re investigating.
Could you share a couple of exact timestamps with timezone for when this happened, plus the theme ID you’re editing? If you’re able to grab the x-request-id from the failing save request in your browser’s Network tab, that would be especially helpful for tracing it.
@Alan_G This is happening currently with all trial themes (any downloaded from the Shopify theme store) and all development themes. Its a much bigger issue than what is here.
Just go on any theme, make some changes - save - make changes again and they won’t be applied. Then you receive the “another user is editing the theme” message. I tested it out for the past hour or so.
It was affecting me all day during my theme development process and I was like uhh whats going on? haha.
Would love an update on this when you can. Thanks!
Thanks folks - I appreciate the reports. We’re looking into things on our end, I’ll loop back here once I have an update to share - really appreciate your patience.
Hey @Nicola_Paul - thanks for reaching out. The earlier issue we were tracking was mitigated on July 10 from what I can see , so I’d like to trace what you’re seeing now as a fresh report.
Could you share two affected .myshopify.com domains, the theme IDs, and a couple of exact recent timestamps with timezone? An x-request-id from the failing save request in the browser Network tab would also be especially helpful. If you’d rather not post the store details publicly, I can set up a DM as well.
For now, I’d avoid overriding the warning unless you’re certain no staff member, app, or theme-sync process is updating the theme, just so that no changes are lost. I’ll take the examples back to the team and loop back here.
Hey @Nicola_Paul - thanks, for this, I was able to trace the save in our logs here.
This doesn’t appear to be the broader issue from earlier in July returning. In this case, two updates from the same theme editor session completed immediately before the save, but the editor then used an older theme version and incorrectly presented that as another user editing the theme.
Happy to pass this along as a separate editor issue though. Could you let me know whether you’re still able to reproduce it today? For now, refreshing the editor before retrying is the safest option.
