What is the point of the new Dev Dashboard?

I initially thought the new dev dashboard is for people that develop custom apps and checkout extensions for themselves and their stores and can act as a replacement for the partner dashboard, if apps do not need to be rolled out and are not monetized. But then I tried to roll out a checkout extension I build from the dev dashboard to our production store, but that does not seem to work. So it seems only for development (Nomen est omen…)?

Could you please clarify and explain why the dev dashboard was built? Thank you!

You can find more info here: About Dev Dashboard

The Dev Dashboard is your central hub for creating and managing Shopify apps. It provides a unified development experience with powerful tools to build, test, and monitor your applications. Whether you’re a merchant customizing your own stores or a developer building for clients, the Dev Dashboard gives you access to the full capabilities of the Shopify platform.

Regarding distribution, it’s explained here: Select a distribution method

@gonzaloriestra Thank you for the links. However it is not clear to me if apps like checkout extensions can be installed on our own shop without the partners dashboard?

Well, to select the distribution method (custom in your case) from the Dev Dashboard, you have to follow this link that currently goes to Partners Dashboard.

Not all the functionality has been fully migrated yet to Dev Dashboard.

Yes, merchants can use the dev dashboard to build apps for themselves without needing to create a partner account.

so @TerenceShopify you say partner account is not needed for merchants anymore. @gonzaloriestra says, the link for the distribution goes to the partners dashboard. can both be true or am i missing sth?

If you are building apps for your own stores you don’t need to do any distribution step. For merchants building for themselves they don’t need to do distribution and therefore don’t need a partners account.

If you are building apps for others then you need a partners account and will distribute apps via the partners dashboard.

That does make sense. Thank you for clarifying. The only thing that is not working is now is the app checkout extension I created shows up in the dev store correctly like so:

But when I install the app on the production store, it does not show up in the checkout rules section under settings. So when I click on ‘add rule’ I cannot select my app extension. Is there still a limitation if apps are bing installed through the dev dashboard directly to a live store or is the issue somewhere else?
