Change email as a customer

I was referred here from Twitter.

When will we have a way to change email address? I’m asking as a customer; I don’t have a Shopify store. The reason I need this, is I’m going to lose access to the email account I have registered with Shopify. I’d like to change it before that happens, but I don’t want to lose my order history.

You can ask the store support team or store owner to update your email address, as long as you provide valid proof. This way, your account history will remain intact and your customer ID will stay the same. Currently, it seems that customers cannot change their email address on their own

Will this need to be done for each store?

Hi, @Thomas_Ingram when you create a customer account on a store hosted at store.myshopify.com, you’re actually creating a unique customer ID for that specific Shopify store. This ID is exclusive to that store only. So, if you change the email address for one store, it will only update the email linked to that particular customer ID.
I’d still love to hear more details from you.

I’m happy to provide any details you’d like; I’m not sure what to tell you though…

I have two Gmail accounts, let’s call them Account-A and Account-B. I also have a Google Apps For Your Domain account with a custom domain name, Domain-Account-C. When I setup everything many years ago, I set Account-B to forward everything to Domain-Account-C. I also setup Domain-Account-C to be able to send email as Account-B. Some time after that, I lost the password to Account-B. (I don’t know. I have a password for it in my password manager, but it isn’t working. I also have genuinely lost access to the Account-B recovery, if I had it set at all. Account-A and Account-B were both created before I was as careful about keeping track of credentials as I am now. Lesson learned.)

So now I’m in the situation where I want to migrate Domain-Account-C to a different provider. I’m afraid that when I do that though, I’ll lose the remaining access I have to Account-B. One of the main concerns with that is Shopify uses Account-B. Account-B was my “throwaway” account which I used for stores and other online accounts when I was unsure how much spam I was signing up for. I can still access Account-A, so I’ve migrated basically everything over from Account-B. Shopify is basically the last holdout.
