Has anyone experienced a sudden drop in Shopify App Store reviews?

Hi Shopify Team,

I’m looking for some clarification regarding App Store reviews.

Our app, Discount Depot, previously had 49 reviews. Over time, I noticed one or two reviews disappear, and I assumed those merchants had removed them themselves.

However, yesterday we saw a much larger drop—our review count went from 47 to 37 almost overnight.

This seems unusual because:

  • The reviews were from genuine merchants.
  • They were not incentivized or fake reviews.
  • Many of them were 2–3 years old.

It’s difficult to believe that 10 merchants would independently delete their reviews at the same time.

Could someone from the Shopify team explain what might cause this?

  • Has Shopify recently performed a review cleanup?
  • Are older reviews being re-evaluated under new policies?
  • Is there any way for app developers to understand why reviews were removed?

We’re simply looking to better understand the process so we know what happened.

Thank you!

Everything around the Shopify App Reviews system seems to be in a very confusing state right now. Please forward this feedback to the Shopify App Store team so they can investigate carefully.

We have noticed several serious issues:

  1. A large number of our genuine reviews have been removed: hundreds of reviews from real merchants who actually used our app. This is extremely concerning.

  2. Reviews from stores that have already been closed are suddenly appearing again. This makes us question the accuracy and reliability of the review validation process.

  3. Shopify has sent a large batch of “Review Published” notification emails for reviews that were originally published more than two years ago. These reviews have not been edited or updated recently, so the notifications appear to have been triggered incorrectly.

We kindly ask Shopify to thoroughly audit the review system and ensure everything is working correctly before these changes negatively impact honest app developers. Thank you so much! @Luke
